The challenge

During the assembly of motorcycle mirrors, the distance between two internal reference planes determines the number of springs and spacers required.

Previously, operators had to measure this distance manually.

Due to the geometry of the components and the difficulty of accessing both reference planes, the measurement process was time-consuming and prone to inaccuracies.

Additionally, operators had to determine the required assembly components based on the measurement.

The objective was to simplify this process through automated measurement and direct assembly guidance.

Our solution

RAWDEV developed a custom electronic measurement system using a precision laser distance sensor.

A specially designed mechanical fixture positions the motorcycle mirror against a defined reference plane.

The integrated laser sensor measures the distance to the second reference surface.

A microcontroller processes the measurement and automatically determines the required number of springs and spacers for assembly.

Both the measured distance and the corresponding assembly instructions are displayed directly to the operator.

RAWDEV was responsible for the complete system development, including mechanical design, sensor selection, PCB development, microcontroller integration, and display functionality.

The result

The system transformed a difficult manual measurement into a simple and repeatable operation.

Operators only need to place the mirror into the fixture to obtain the measurement and corresponding assembly instructions within seconds.

With a measurement accuracy of 0.05 mm, the device supports precise assembly while reducing manual measurement effort.
